The former Italian Agriculture Minister Paolo De Castro has suggested that 'Mediterranean food
'On the World Heritage list of UNESCO to continue. The Mediterranean food includes pasta, olive oil, tomato, anchovy and tuna. De Castro wants it the Italian way of life 'protection. His initiative is supported by Spain, Greece and Morocco.
The proponents of the proposal are of the opinion that Mediterranean food is threatened by fast food and ready-to-eat food. Italians who have less to spend more often opt for pre-packaged food instead of fresh fruits and vegetables, whose prices have risen. In both Spain and Italy increased the number of obese patients.
It is known as Mediterranean food is low in fat and high in fiber. With a moderate dose of red wine is the best protection against heart disease and arthritis, Italian nutritionists say. "The science has long proven that Mediterranean food is extremely healthy. Moreover, it is part of the common cultural identity of Mediterranean countries ", says De Castro.
At the World Heritage list of UNESCO are mainly cultural and historical grounds and buildings. Yet there are also on the list of non-tangible things, such as endangered languages and traditions. UNESCO is expected to decide in 2009 whether the Mediterranean food on the world heritage list should get easier.
